Description

Excursions to Spain are not limited to visiting Madrid and Barcelona. Small provincial towns of Spain have its special charm. Welcome to Alcala de Henares- the city, located near Madrid on the river Henares.

Alcala de Henares is an ancient town, as it was populated in the Neolithic period. Later, the town was also populated by Romans, Visigoths and Arabs; therefore Alcala de Henares was influenced by many cultures. The name of the city comes from the Arab word “al-qalat” (translated as “fortress”). However, to distinguish it from the other cities, they added the name of the local river “Henares”.

The city is famous for being the homeland of the famous Spanish writer Miguel de Cervantes. What few people know is that it was the place of the meeting of the navigator Christopher Columbus and Spanish Kings Isabella and Ferdinand. And in the end of the XV century, Cardinal Cisneros built one of the oldest universities of Spain in this cit.

The main attractions of Alcala de Henares include the beautiful Cathedral and the oldest Spanish collegiums of San Ildefonso, the house-museum of Cervantes, where the famous writer lived and worked, and the Archbishop’s palace (the place of the first meeting of Christopher Columbus and Spanish Kings Isabella and Ferdinand). Our guide in Alcala de Henares will tell you about this and many other significant places.

Don’t miss the chance to rest from the city fuss in the small city of Alcala de Henares. Enjoy your stay!
